Some moments are so full of anticipation, emotion, and joy that they feel like scenes from a movie. Ryan and Miranda's proposal at Jeannette's Pier on North Carolina's Outer Banks was exactly that.

When Ryan first reached out to me, he had one goal in mind: create the perfect surprise proposal for the woman he loves. She had always wanted the beach to be part of their love story and this was the perfect opportunity on a family vacation.

He wanted every detail to feel intentional, romantic, and unforgettable. Together, we worked through the planning process, discussing locations, timing, and how to make sure the moment remained a complete surprise for Miranda.

After considering several options, we settled on Jeannette's Pier as the perfect setting. With its stunning views stretching out over the Atlantic Ocean and the possibility of a beautiful Outer Banks sunset, it offered everything Ryan had envisioned for the moment he would ask Miranda to spend forever with him.

As often happens with carefully planned surprises, the day didn't unfold exactly as expected.

On the drive over, it almost didn't happen at all.

Miranda's stomach had started bothering her, and Ryan wasn't sure if the evening was going to go according to plan. I could only imagine what was running through his mind as he watched the timeline he'd carefully orchestrated begin to feel uncertain. He sent me a message saying they were there but had to take a little time. But thankfully, after a little while, they made their way up the dock and it was time for Ryan to seize the opportunity.

Turns out their delay allowed the sun to sink onto the horizon creating a beautiful glow! They stepped onto the pier together. Hand in hand, Ryan gently led Miranda farther out to the spot I mentioned. Watching from a distance, camera in hand, I could immediately tell he was nervous. Every proposal comes with excitement, but there is always that moment before it happens when emotions take over.

As they walked, I watched Ryan slowly slip the box out and hold it tightly in his hand. His focus never left Miranda.

The two paused near the railing and looked out across the ocean. The sun was slowly sinking toward the horizon, painting the sky with warm shades of gold, orange, and pink. Waves rolled beneath the pier while the evening breeze drifted across the water.

Then it happened.

Ryan took a step back, and carfully dropped down onto one knee.

For a brief second, Miranda seemed frozen as she realized what was happening. Then her jaw dropped. Her hands flew to her face, covering her now open mouth as she tried to contain her excitement and disbelief.

The surprise had worked perfectly

As Ryan spoke, she stood there overwhelmed with emotion, tears welling in her eyes and a smile spreading across her face. Every word brought her closer to the answer Ryan had been hoping for.

And then, as soon as he finished asking the question, she shouted the answer everyone wanted to hear.

"YES!"

The joy was instant.

The two embraced, laughing, crying, hugging, and kissing as the reality of the moment sank in. It was one of those genuine, unscripted moments that reminds me why I love photographing proposals. Nothing is posed. Nothing is forced. It's simply two people experiencing one of the biggest moments of their lives together.

Throughout the entire proposal, I had been quietly documenting every second without Miranda noticing. From Ryan's nervous walk down the pier to the moment he knelt down and her unforgettable reaction, every emotion was preserved through photographs they will be able to relive for years to come.

Once the excitement settled in, we transitioned into an engagement session that felt every bit as magical as the proposal itself.

The sunset continued to deliver incredible color, vibrance and flare as we explored the pier together. Ryan and Miranda couldn't stop smiling. Every glance, every embrace, and every kiss reflected the excitement of beginning this new chapter together. The closeness, the details, the ring gently shimmering in the sun made everything perfect.

As the sun dipped lower, we moved onto the beach where the remaining light created the perfect atmosphere. Using the iconic pier as a backdrop and adding just a subtle pop of light, I was able to create some truly stunning portraits that highlighted both the beauty of the Outer Banks and the connection these two share.

Why I do what I do...

As an engagement and wedding photographer, moments like these are why I love what I do. Being invited into such an important milestone is an incredible honor. But beyond photographing the proposal itself, I love helping couples plan these experiences from the very beginning—working together to create a moment that feels personal, meaningful, and unforgettable. Being a part of that magic is something I look back on and smile!

Ryan's vision came to life perfectly that evening on Jeannette's Pier, and Miranda's reaction was everything he had hoped for.

Their proposal wasn't just a question.

It was the beginning of a new adventure.

And it was an absolute privilege to help tell their story!!
